We know: microneedling isn’t just a miracle weapon against fine lines and acne scars — with the right active ingredients, it also puts an end to dark circles and under-eye bags. In this article, we explain exactly how that works.

First things first: How do dark circles actually form?

Fundamentally, there are two types of dark circles. Either blood vessels shine through the very thin skin under the eyes. These dark circles are usually reddish, bluish, or shadowy — people with particularly fair skin tend toward this type of dark circle. Or it’s a matter of hyperpigmentation under the eyes. These tend to be more dark brown to grayish and are hereditary. While the first form (blood vessels showing through) can still be kept in check with enough sleep, plenty of fluids, a balanced diet, and avoiding nicotine and alcohol, hyperpigmentation requires a heavier form of artillery. This is where microneedling comes into play.

During microneedling, a roller covered in many tiny needles is passed over the skin. These needles penetrate gently into the top layer of skin, creating microscopic injuries. What might sound a bit brutal at first actually shows results. These tiny injuries activate the facial skin’s self-healing power. Afterward, skin not only looks more rested, more regenerated, and fresher — dark circles are also noticeably lightened. At the same time, the skin produces collagen, elastin, and hyaluron — perfect for radiant skin and a beautiful glow.

Since microneedling involves working with sharp needles, you should never perform this treatment method yourself, without the help of a dermatologist or beautician. Otherwise, serious injuries can occur. We recommend a visit to a beauty salon with professionally trained staff. Microneedling for dark circles: How a treatment works

To effectively and sustainably combat dark circles with microneedling, several sessions are usually necessary. Typically, at least four sessions — spread over several months — are recommended. For particularly pronounced dark circles, additional treatments or touch-up sessions may also be needed.

  1. Cleansing before treatment

Before we perform the microneedling, we carefully cleanse and disinfect your facial skin. This ensures that neither dirt nor bacteria can enter the small wounds. Inflammation has no chance! A local numbing cream helps against possible pain, especially on such thin areas of skin as under the eyes.

  1. Microneedling

After cleansing, the actual treatment begins. A so-called needling roller, also known as a dermaroller, is guided over your face with some pressure, so that the fine needles gently perforate the stratum corneum of your skin as well as deeper skin layers. The roller is drawn over the skin in different directions to achieve the best possible result.

In our studio Microneedling Berlin, a radiofrequency pulse is also triggered. We tailor how deep the needles penetrate and how strong the radiofrequency current is entirely to you and your needs.

  1. Aftercare

After the treatment, your skin will be slightly reddened. This isn’t a sign of improper treatment, but the result to be expected. Afterward, we treat your face with rich moisturizing creams. Make sure your skin isn’t overly strained in the following hours — give it rest and care.

You can of course help your skin along in its self-healing process. Use a nourishing moisturizer, an anti-aging serum, or a jasmine ointment. Make sure your skincare and cleansing products are gentle on the skin and, ideally, contain vitamins A and C. In the days following the treatment, you’ll need a high level of sun protection, even in winter. However, your sunscreen should be skin-friendly and not irritate your skin further.

By the way, you’ll notice the result right away: after the treatment, your skin not only feels more vital, but also firmer and more hydrated — dark circles are noticeably lightened and large pores are minimized.

How painful is microneedling for dark circles?

Depending on individual pain tolerance, the treatment may be perceived as mildly painful. The actual pain also depends on the needle rollers used. The longer the needles, the more uncomfortable the treatment feels. However, many people also report only a slight burning or tingling sensation. Since only the top layer of skin — which contains no nerves — is affected by the needles, microneedling generally isn’t expected to cause significant pain.

Does microneedling have dangerous side effects?

When microneedling is performed by professional staff, no dangerous side effects occur. Because the tissue around the eyes is very sensitive, the skin can easily be injured by improper treatment. For this reason, self-administered treatments are strongly discouraged.

After a microneedling treatment, the skin is, as already mentioned, reddened and irritated. Mild swelling can occur, as can flaky and dry skin. However, these skin reactions are harmless and are part of the regeneration phase.

Conclusion: Is microneedling actually effective against dark circles?

Treatment with needling rollers demonstrably stimulates the self-healing process of the tissue around the eyes. This renews the skin and makes it less permeable. Dark circles are visibly reduced after microneedling. Microneedling has further benefits, too:

  • Lymphatic flow is stimulated, which helps prevent fluid retention. Fewer under-eye bags also visually improve the appearance of the eye area.
  • Wrinkles around the eyes disappear, making the eyes look livelier, more radiant, and fresher — essential for skincare after 40, too.
  • Microneedling stimulates blood circulation in the skin and supplies it with oxygen and nutrients. Bye-bye, tired dark circles! Hello, great skincare routine. Microneedling for dark circles
