The reason for this is the lack of melanin in the hair, which is meant to transmit the light pulses from lasers and similar devices to the hair root. In this article, we explain how you can still remove your light hair permanently and which semi-permanent method is a good alternative.

Diode laser: The right method for permanent removal of light hair?

To understand why permanent hair removal is sometimes not possible for light hair, you need to be familiar with the technology behind laser hair removal in Berlin Mitte. At Sanft & Schön, we normally tackle your hair with innovative diode laser technology.

Laser hair removal for light hair: Lack of melanin makes treatment difficult

With wavelengths ranging from 755 nm to 1064 nm, diode lasers are ideal for treating deep-seated hair follicles and very thick hair. The key component is melanin—more specifically, the reddish, brown and black pigments that give skin and hair their individual colour. The laser light is absorbed by the melanin, converting the light energy into heat and destroying the cell structures responsible for hair growth. Ideally, the skin then remains hair-free permanently.

Eumelanin vs. pheomelanin: Hair pigment makes the difference

Permanent hair removal using a diode laser works particularly well on dark hair and light skin: in this case, only the hair absorbs the light pulses, while the skin is barely affected. This is because dark hair contains a great deal of eumelanin, whereas light hair is dominated by the red-yellow pigment pheomelanin. The latter cannot absorb the light energy and convert it specifically into heat. You may have observed this effect yourself in summer: while dark clothing heats up in the sun and makes you sweat more, light textiles reflect the sun’s rays and help you keep a cool head. There are also risks associated with laser hair removal that you should definitely know about. Permanent removal of light hair therefore requires other factors that damage the root and stop hair growth in the long term.

Permanent hair removal for light hair: Is Super Hair Removal the solution?

A method that has now proven effective for permanently removing light hair is Super Hair Removal—SHR for short. SHR combines laser technology with IPL pulsed-light treatments, guaranteeing a gentle, pain-free treatment without compromising the result. This form of permanent hair removal uses the melanin pathway in the hair only to a small extent, instead working mainly through the skin on the stem cells responsible for hair production.

The ‘In-Motion method’ for permanent removal of light hair

The special feature of the SHR method is that it does not use the high energy peaks of laser hair removal. Instead, skin tissue is treated with considerably lower energy but many repetitions. This gently and gradually warms the melanin in the hair and the stem-cell tissue to a moderate temperature of around 42–45°C. Unlike diode lasers, this uses the so-called ‘In-Motion method’. This means that the handpiece emitting the light pulses glides continuously over the skin. This maintains the skin’s temperature for a certain period of time.

SHR is ideal for light hair or dark skin

The longer exposure time and warming of the skin destroy the proteins that promote the formation of hair roots. Ideally, this prevents the hair roots from growing back permanently. Because the treatment works mainly through the skin, it can also remove fine or very light hair, which was previously hardly possible with other methods. SHR is also suitable without issue for dark or tanned skin, which is otherwise difficult to treat as well.

Permanent removal of light hair: When does SHR not work?

Super Hair Removal also has its limits. The method cannot be used if your hair has been epilated, waxed or plucked because it still needs the hair as a bridge to transfer the heat into the skin. It is also problematic if your skin is tattooed. As the light pulses can cause colour changes and a health risk cannot be ruled out, tattoos must not be treated.

Is your skin prone to moles? Moles contain the pigment melanin and therefore absorb the light rays more intensely than other areas of your skin. We strongly recommend leaving out heavily pigmented areas of skin or covering them where possible to avoid unwanted reactions that alter the skin.

An effective method: Permanent removal of light hair with electrolysis

Another, albeit somewhat more time-consuming, method for permanently removing light hair is electrolysis, also known as needle epilation. Unlike other options, electrolysis does not use light or laser pulses—and can therefore be used regardless of hair colour.

Hair by hair: How needle epilation works

With needle epilation, each hair is removed individually along with its root. How exactly does this work? A very fine, sterile needle is inserted into the skin along the hair and pushed down to the hair root. An electrical pulse is then sent to the hair follicle, destroying it. This permanently prevents the hair from growing back. Since the procedure takes significantly more time than SHR, for example, electrolysis should primarily be performed on small areas of the body. The face or bikini line is particularly suitable, for instance.

Electrolysis for permanent removal of light hair: Advantages

A major advantage of needle epilation is its pinpoint precision. You can be sure that the electrical pulse reaches exactly the right spot. This means that only the hair root is treated and the surrounding skin is not affected. Electrolysis is also suitable for skin with moles or tattoos. Since no light pulses reach the surface of the skin, neither tattoo ink nor melanin can react to them and trigger unwanted side effects. Needle epilation is also an effective, promising treatment, especially for small areas of the body. Do you have an ingrown hair in the intimate area? Electrolysis can help with that too.

What you should consider before needle epilation

Are you having needle epilation performed to permanently remove your light hair? As with preparing for laser hair removal, there are a few factors to consider in advance for electrolysis as well. Make sure your hairs are at least two to three millimetres long—waxing or epilating is absolutely off limits before needle epilation! This is the only way your trusted beautician can insert the needle in the right place. Also keep in mind—as with all other methods for permanently removing light hair—that several treatment stages are needed before every hair has actually been removed. This is due to the cyclical growth of your hair: only 20 to 30 percent of hairs are in the active growth phase at any one time. The rest are in a kind of resting state and reactivate after a few days or weeks. At your next appointment, the area of skin will therefore always be carefully treated again so that no hair remains at the end of the treatment cycle.

After electrolysis: Consider the following factors

To avoid complications after needle epilation, you should protect your skin from moisture and heat. Saunas and swimming pools are therefore off limits for the time being. Treated areas must also not be exposed to extreme UV radiation, for example on a summer holiday or in a tanning bed. Make sure to protect your skin in everyday life too and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. You should also not apply cosmetic products to treated skin areas for 72 hours.

Permanent removal of light hair: A good alternative to SHR and needle epilation

Would you like to enjoy silky-smooth skin for as long as possible without undergoing lengthy permanent hair removal for light hair? Then we recommend professional waxing at our waxing studio in Berlin Mitte.

Silky-smooth skin in no time

Brazilian hair removal is super quick and lets you enjoy smooth skin for up to four weeks—stubbly legs, razor burn and cuts are finally a thing of the past.

Using a wooden spatula, we apply liquid warm wax to the area to be treated. There, it binds perfectly to the hairs while opening your skin’s pores at the same time—making the treatment less painful. Once the wax has dried, our depiladoras pull it off with one swift motion against the direction of hair growth, et voilà. After the treatment, we remove wax residue from the skin and care for it with cooling, soothing aloe vera gel.

Side effects of permanent removal of light hair with wax

Whether eyebrow waxing or hair removal on the legs: because your hairs are pulled out of the skin along with their roots, it takes between two and eight weeks for them to grow back. Hair growth also slows down considerably on regularly waxed areas of the body. Your skin stays smooth for longer, and the regrowing hairs are finer, softer and much less noticeable.

Incidentally, a great side effect of Brazilian waxing is its exfoliating effect on your skin. The wax removes dead skin cells along with the unwanted hairs! This gives your skin an irresistible glow.

Conclusion: Laser hair removal for light hair

Permanent hair removal for light hair is not possible? Far from it! Modern, innovative techniques such as Super Hair Removal or the classic method of electrolysis make it possible to tackle even light hair permanently.

While conventional laser treatment does not work on light hair because the pigment melanin is missing from the hair, SHR works primarily through the skin and sustainably damages the stem cells responsible for hair growth. Successful needle epilation is not tied to the presence of melanin either: a sterile needle is inserted along the hair shaft to the root, where an electrical pulse is sent to the hair follicle. This destroys it, in turn enabling permanent hair removal for light hair.

If you prefer a quick solution, you can also consider waxing for long-lasting removal of light hair. The areas to be treated are hair-free in no time and for several weeks—without major expense, treatment effort or elaborate post-waxing care. In addition, your hairs grow back thinner and more slowly, so waxing sessions become progressively less painful and quicker.
